The historic downtown is located on both sides of the river and is full of unique shops. The Vermont Bookstore features great reads and a fine selection of jazz and classical recordings. Middlebury is host to many distinctive cultural attractions as well, including the Vermont Folklife Center, Henry Sheldon Museum of Vermont History, the UVM Morgan Horse Farm, and Middlebury College Museum of Art. All offer special exhibits and programs as well as permanent displays.
The Middlebury College Center for the Arts offers a full schedule of dance performances, stage productions, and concerts during the academic year. Folk music and family entertainment are tradtions at the summer Festival on the Green. And in the fall and winter the After Dark Series invites visitors, residents and students for special performances, while Town Hall Theater hosts theater productions, performances and art exhibits throughout the year.
The Middlebury area offers an extraordinary range of outdoor activities, including hiking, biking, golf, kayaking, fly-fishing, bird watching, alpine and cross-country skiing. The Middlebury College Bowl and several nearby Nordic and snowshoe centers offer great winter fun. Middlebury College also operates an eighteen-hole golf course. The Trail Around Middlebury is accessible for gentle hikes right from downtown; the Green Mountain National Forest terrain offers more challenging terrain and access to Vermont's Long Trail. The area is also known for excellent bicycling in the rolling farmlands and foothills of the Green Mountains, and area fitness centers sponsor local triathlons and road races.
