St. Albans

Downtown St. Albans

As in many Vermont towns, when you look at the stately buildings in the historic downtowns, you are apt to wonder what in it's history gave the town its wealth and prestige.

In the case of St. Albans, the answer dates from 1855, when the Central Vermont Railway (CVR) established its headquarters here. Rail played a vital role in the city's growth and economy, bringing great prosperity and affluence, still evident today in the numerous grand Victorian homes and the town's nickname, "Rail City."

Downtown still bustles today with activity. Main Street offers fine specialty shops and award-winning restaurants. In the summer and fall the Farmer’s Market boasts fresh produce, specialty foods and fine handcrafted goods. St. Albans’ close proximity to Lake Champlain provides for boating, hiking and biking opportunities with spectacular views, especially during the fall foliage.

The historic buildings on Main and Church Streets grace one of Vermont’s largest downtown parks where community activities and events are held throughout the year. In the spring, visitors can experience 40 years of tradition and fun at the Vermont Maple Festival. Come summertime, local bands and artists step up to perform in the gazebo on the town square.

This town green is also where the northern-most battle during the Civil War was fought – when a group of Confederate soldiers staged multiple bank robberies and attempted to set the town ablaze.  The St. Albans Raid and the Age of Rail and more can be explored at the St. Albans Historical Museum.

Whether Downtown St. Albans is your destination or just a stop along the way as you explore the farms and rural centers of Franklin County, you can be sure to find something worthwhile around every corner.
