Museums and Galleries for Art and Craft

Art Museums

From American and European 19th-century masterworks, to exciting work by talented new artists and craft artisans, there's much to see in Vermont’s museums and galleries.

Shelburne Museum, located just 6 miles south of Burlington, offers an eclectic experience. Set in a park-like landscape, you'll explore over 30 buildings with exhibits ranging from American folk and decorative arts to French Impressionist paintings. Historic collections that include masterful 19th century American landscapes are also found at the University of Vermont and Middlebury College art museums, and Bennington Museum in southern Vermont, and the St. Johnsbury Athenaeum in the northeast.

Contemporary and cutting edge art abounds too. Southern Vermont’s Brattleboro Museum and Art Center and the Manchester Center for the Arts feature some of the best 20th and 21st century art. Like them,  Studio Place Arts (Barre), Helen Day Art Center (Stowe), and Burlington’s Firehouse and S.P.A.C.E. galleries in the central and northern regions in exhibiting some of the newest of the new.

Some of America's most gifted craft artisians live and work in Vermont. From shops led by masters like Miranda Thomas to the work of individual artists following their own muse, you'll find many expressions in clay, wood, fiber, glass, metal and mixed media. For the most comprehensive look at the work of the talented Vermont artisans, visit the Vermont State Craft Centers. And expect to find fine art in a number of mediums combined with craft in many of the galleries listed below.
