Vermont Tourism Calendar of Events: August is Gorgeous in the Green Mountains


Summertime festivities are abundant in Vermont’s lakes, mountains and towns. Come hungry for local food and local flair as a dozen upcoming Vermont agricultural fairs promise to entertain. Here’s a sampler of the 260 events posted on VermontVacation.com this month:

Vermont Blueberry Festival
July 26 - August 4, West Dover, Vt.
Blueberries, vintage cars, music, food, parade and fashion; if it’s blue, it’s probably happening in the Mount Snow area towns of Wilmington, Whitingham and Dover.

Vermont Festival of the Arts
August 1 – Labor Day
The towns of the Mad River Valley play host to one of the most diverse festivals in New England. With more than 100 quality arts-related events and activities, the Vermont Festival of the Arts is designed to entertain the soul, enlighten the mind, and energize the spirit. Because this is a multi-dimensional, multi-media, multi-age series of events, there is truly something for everyone.

27th Annual Quilt Exhibition at Billings Farm & Museum
Aug. 1 - Sep. 22, Woodstock
Billings Farm's 27th annual juried exhibition of over 50 colorful and exquisitely designed quilts made in Windsor County, Vermont. Quilting demonstrations and activities for children and adults.

Canaan's 65th Annual Sugar on Snow Festival
Aug. 2, Canaan
For 65 years, the people of Canaan & W. Stewartstown have celebrated winter with an afternoon into evening gathering on the town common. Good food, music and snow with maple from our mountains.

75th Annual August Supper on the Lawn
August 3, Chester
After 75 years, it’s evolved into an artform with a fully laden banquet table beneath a tent – if you are choosing one church supper, this could be it.

Southern Vermont Art and Craft Festival
Aug. 2 - 4, Bennington
The festival houses 160 talented artists and artisans who display and sell original one of a kind work as well as traditional and contemporary crafts. There are specialty food producers, wine makers and spirit distillers too. Great fresh food from local restaurants abounds. Craft demos and live music make it a very festive event.

Brandon's Yard Sale Day
Aug. 3, Brandon
The town-wide yard sale start at 9 a.m. and lasts as long as there are still bargains available! Official yard sales are on 'The Map', which will be available on Saturday morning at the Brandon Museum and Visitor Center and at.

Specialized Catamount Classic Pro XCT
Aug 3-4, Williston
How often do you have the chance to see the world’s finest mountain bikers—many fresh from the London Olympics—taking massive air in your back yard? That’s exactly what will happen on August 3rd and 4th at the Specialized Catamount Classic Pro XCT in Williston, Vermont at Catamount Outdoor Family Center.

Cooler in the Mountains Concert Series
August 3, 10, 17, 24, Killington
At Killington Resort, the Saturday afternoon free concert series returns with family-friendly outdoor concerts at the Roaring Brook Umbrella Bars, plus outdoor activities, games & BBQ.

Burke Mountain Bike 'n Brew
Aug. 3, East Burke
The 5th Annual Burke Mountain Bike & Brew brings music, Vermont brews, and mountain biking to the mountain! Bike all day on the Kingdom Trails and Burke Bike Park, then join the brew event afterward. Freestyle Demo shows, bike contests, gear demos, mountain board demos and lessons and group rides.

Heritage Chicken Day at Billings Farm & Museum
Aug. 3, Woodstock
The Farm & Museum will feature a variety of breeds of chickens to see their similarities and differences, plus baby chicks. Fun facts about chickens and eggs, plus the egg toss and games.

Lake Champlain Dragon Boat Festival
Aug. 4, Burlington
78 community and Breast Cancer Survivor Dragon Boat teams will race against each other for charity. Entertainment, food, silent auction.

Emancipation and Higher Education
Aug. 4, Strafford
For the first time in history, Abraham Lincoln will visit Strafford to honor and celebrate the recent sesquicentennial anniversaries of the Emancipation Proclamation and visit with friend and author of the Land Grant College Act of 1862, Senator Justin Morrill. Lincoln will regale his audience with sharp political discourse and folksy humor. Lincoln fought to free the slaves and Morrill worked to liberate their education.

Starry Starry Night
Aug. 7, Hubbardton
Members of the Green Mountain Alliance of Amateur Astronomers share their telescopes and knowledge. Bring blankets, flashlights and your own binoculars or telescopes if you like. We provide the marshmallows.

Burlington Ensemble’s Summer Serenades
August 7-10, Several Locations
Burlington Ensemble's Summer Serenades 2013 Season 3 is a festival of chamber music concerts performed by world-class musicians in some of Vermont's most stunning venues. Gates will open at 5:30pm for outdoor picnicking. Event dates include Aug.7: Basin Harbor Club, Aug. 8: West Monitor Barn, Aug. 9: Castleton State College and Aug.10: Shelburne Farms.

The Danville Fair
August 9-10, Danville
The tradition of the Danville Fair goes back further than most of us. This is truly a good ole country fair, starting with a street dance on Friday night. Saturday will begin with a parade, followed by the Grand Horse Pulling as a major event drawing the best teams in the area.

Antique Tractor Day at Billings Farm & Museum
Aug. 11, Woodstock
Tractors made between 1930 and the 1960s will be displayed by the proud and talented folks who restored them. The tractor parade at 1:00 p.m., includes restoration details and historical information. Tractor-drawn wagon rides and tractor activities for children, including the popular tractor sandbox.

Southern Vermont Hot Dog Cook Off
Aug. 11, Chester
The 2nd Annual Southern Vermont Hot Dog Cook Off to benefit the Springfield Humane Society will be held at the Stone Hearth Inn. Enjoy music by the Bondville Boys and incredible gourmet hot dogs prepared by 20 chefs, both professional and amateur.

Annual Bennington Battle Day 5K Road Race & Anniversary Celebration

A living history encampment will take place at the Monument. Drill presentations, musket and artillery demonstrations, educational exhibits, and activities for children will be ongoing. Authentic cannons will be on display and fired periodically. The 5K race begins at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, followed by an easy 1/2 mile kids fun run.

Pirate Run at Lake Champlain Maritime Festival

Dress in your favorite pirate costume and get some treasure at this 5k! Run along the Burlington Waterfront during the Lake Champlain Maritime Festival.

BBQ Bonanza Music Festival
Aug. 17, Vergennes
Basin Harbor’s BBQ Bonanza brings together all the things to love about Vermont summers: music, BBQ, beer and the outdoors.

Circus Smirkus Big Top Tour
Aug. 17-18, Greensboro
Grab your ruby slippers and click your heels together as Circus Smirkus goes "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" with a new spin on the Wizard of Oz. It will take acrobatic thinking, highwire hearts, and courageous clowns to embark on this Emerald City adventure!

Saint Albans Civil War Heritage Weekend
Aug. 17-18, St. Albans
The 1860s reverberate in St. Albans as re-enactors bring this tumultuous era to life. A top 10 Vermont Civil War attraction, this event returns to historic Taylor Park for a third year. Portrayals of civilian and military life, including numerous displays and demonstrations, take place on the green.

The St. Albans Raid Half Marathon
August 18, St. Albans
Run like bandits through the streets of Saint Albans during the first annual St. Albans Raid Half Marathon. The race starts at the original scene of the heist 149 years ago. Come run a portion of the exact same get-a-way trail the original raiders took.

Some Enchanted Evening II
Aug. 17, Newport
Classical and international Jazz vocalist Eileen Kennedy, member of Asheville's Symphony Chorus & Broadway Show Choir, sings from ""The Great American Songbook," Broadway, Piaf, Bocelli, and more.

15th Annual Calais Folk Concert
Aug. 18, Calais
Vermont vocalist Deb Flanders, great-niece of Helen Hartness Flanders performs with Vermont folk music icon Pete Sutherland at the Old West Church in Calais. This year’s Calais concert will also feature Anna Roberts-Gevalt, a Vermont native immersed in Appalachian music.

Vergennes Day
Aug. 23-24, Vergennes
Celebration begins with a street dance on Friday. On Saturday, start the day with a pancake breakfast, Little City 5K Walk & 10K Race, and enjoy 80 crafters & vendors, wagon rides, bandstand music, chicken BBQ, children's venues, a car show and rubber duckie race.

Wall to Canvas 4
Aug. 24, South Burlington
Magic Hat Artifactory is hosting this urban arts competition to benefit the Shelburne Craft School and will feature 12 street style artists competing live! Art auction, live music, food and drink.

Mount Independence-Hubbardton Military Road Car Tour
Aug. 24, Hubbardton
The Crown Point Road Association offers a driving tour along part of the 1776 Mount Independence-Hubbardton Military Road, from the Hubbardton Battlefield to Otter Creek.

3rd annual Bump Your Rump Mountain Bike Race
Aug. 25, Grafton
Six hours of cross-country mountain biking. Four-mile racetrack, starting at Grafton Ponds & continues on Grafton Village Trails and through the village of Grafton. Single track (80%), cross-country ski trails (15%) and pavement (5%). Enjoy a BBQ lunch after the race.

The North Face Race To The Top Of Vermont
Aug. 25, Stowe
The North Face Race To The Top Of Vermont is the second largest hill climb in New England. The course follows the historic Toll Road in Stowe up Mt. Mansfield, the highest mountain in Vermont. There are running, mountain biking and hiking options. For kids ages 4-14 there’s the MVP Healthcare Kids Run For Fun. This is a ~1km non-competitive run where everyone is a winner.

Killington Classic Motorcycle Rally
Aug. 29 - Sept. 1, Killington
A premier motorcycle rally, presented by Americade. Social events, a vendor village, bike & stunt shows, live music, and a 12-mile parade, plus five days of touring through Vermont's Green Mountains.
