Historic Downtown

Springfield

Seen from above, a small rural town adjacent to a flowing river and people in a green field.

Springfield, Vermont

Located in Vermont’s Upper Connecticut River Valley region on the banks of the Black and Connecticut rivers, Springfield’s tool and telescope manufacturing history sets the town apart. Whimsical murals and sculptures throughout downtown lead the way as you explore, from a colorful painting on brick celebrating democracy to a distinctive clothespin sculpture on Main Street. The town’s artistic depth doesn’t stop there; it’s also home to one of the state’s five designated Vermont State Craft Galleries and a handful of art galleries. With two ski resorts within a 30-minute drive of downtown, a recreation area and boat launch on the banks of the Connecticut River, and miles of hiking unspooling around the nearby valley, there’s a lot of ways to explore this southern Vermont town.

People gather around telescopes outdoors in the summer.

Stellafane

Founded in 1923 and considered the birthplace of amateur telescope-making, Stellafane’s history is rich.In addition to stargazing in beautiful southern Vermont with a large telescope, Stellafane is still an active amateur telescope makers club, hosting mirror-making classes, a convention, and star parties.
