3 Days in Waterbury
Nestled in Vermont’s Upper Green Mountains region, Waterbury has earned a reputation as a food and outdoor recreation mecca. Tera Dacek, a volunteer committee member of Revitalizing Waterbury, offers an insider’s view on the best way to spend 3 days in Waterbury.
DAY 1
9 a.m. | A Morning in the Mountains — But First, Coffee
Start your day in Waterbury with a hearty breakfast to fuel your mountain adventures. Whether you’re craving a sit-down meal or something quick to go, this town has you covered.
For a full Vermont-style breakfast, head to Maxi’s for comforting classics like a goat cheese and bacon omelet or a stack of fluffy pancakes drizzled with local maple syrup. Prefer to take your breakfast to the trail? Grab a handcrafted breakfast empanada or a cruller (a heavenly croissant-doughnut hybrid) from Hender’s Bakeshop and Café, just off I-89 in the heart of Waterbury.

10:30 a.m. | Into the Forest We Go
Start your morning with a walk or hike surrounded by Waterbury’s natural beauty. Whether you want a peaceful stroll, a scenic photo op, or a deeper adventure into Vermont history, there’s a trail to match.
Option 1: Winooski River Footbridge
- Where: River Road
- Distance: 224 feet
- Difficulty: Easy
- Estimated Time: 15 minutes
Constructed in 2015 by the Green Mountain Club, this suspension bridge crosses the Winooski River, connecting a previously isolated section of the Long Trail. Easily accessible while providing stunning views of the mountains and river, it’s ideal for a short and scenic start to your day.
Option 2: Waterbury Dam Walk
- Where: Before the gates of Little River State Park
- Difficulty: Easy
- Estimated Time: 15-20 minutes
This is a quiet walk on gravel with big views. Constructed between 1935 and 1938 by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the Waterbury Dam was part of a significant effort to control flooding from the Winooski River and its tributaries. Today, it’s a gentle, rewarding walk offering sweeping vistas of the mountains and reservoir, a great way to take in Waterbury’s landscape history.
Option 3: Dalley Loop Trail
- Where: Little River State Park
- Distance: 2.8 miles
- Difficulty: Moderate to Difficult
- Estimated Time: 1–2 hours
This trail is named after Civil War veteran Dan Dalley, who settled on this hillside in 1875. The path follows an old logging road, levels out in peaceful woods, and finishes with a steeper descent. Along the way, discover the stone foundations of 19th-century homesteads and get a glimpse into Vermont’s history.

11:30 a.m.–3 p.m. | Picnic & Play at the Reservoir
Spend your afternoon soaking up the best of nature at Waterbury Reservoir Beach, a local favorite for its mountain views, sandy shore, and relaxed atmosphere. But first: provisions.
Make a quick stop at the Woodstock Farmers’ Market store on Route 100. This local spot is a food lover’s paradise, featuring everything from artisan cheeses and Vermont beverages to freshly baked local breads and gourmet sandwiches.
Once you’ve arrived at the reservoir, settle in at one of the shaded picnic tables or spread out on the green (a scenic mountain view is right up the hill behind the beach parking lot). Umiak Outdoor Outfitters has you covered if you’re feeling adventurous — rent a kayak or stand-up paddleboard and explore the lake’s calm waters, coves, and inlets, available in the summer and early fall seasons.

3–5 p.m. | Settle In, Slow Down, and Sweeten the Day
After a day of sun, trails, and treats, make one more essential stop before you wind down at Ben & Jerry’s Factory in Waterbury. Grab a scoop (or two) of your favorite flavor and take a stroll through the Flavor Graveyard, which has a playful and iconic Vermont vibe.
Next, it’s time to relax and get settled before an evening of more local flavor and fun. Choose your home base for the night. If checking off a Vermont State Park is on your list, try camping under the stars at Little River State Park. If you are looking for a warm and cozy retreat, staying at Stowe Cabins is a great option. Both offer peaceful, scenic stays that keep you close to nature and not far from town.
5:30 p.m. Onward | Community, Cuisine, and Live Music
As the sun dips low, the town comes alive with music and connection. On Thursdays from June through August, Waterbury hosts the Rotary Concerts in the Park, a family-friendly favorite featuring rotating artists and a laid-back atmosphere under the pavilion at Rusty Parker Park. Or wander over to Music in the Alley on Stowe Street, a casual local gathering with a big heart and great sound tucked between historic buildings.
Just a bit out of town is the lively nightlife at Zenbarn where you’ll find a mix of local and nationally touring acts along with craft cocktails and a local menu. If it’s Wednesday, follow the sound of banjos and fiddles to Prohibition Pig Brewery, where live bluegrass pairs perfectly with a cold pint.
The full calendar of events is located on Discover Waterbury’s website.
Need a bite? Stop by Stone’s Throw Pizza for artisan pizza, crisp salads, and creative cocktails and mocktails. Dine in or take advantage of their easy back door pick-up if you’d rather bring your meal to the music or back to your camp or cabin. Not in the mood for handcrafted pizza? At Salt & Rind, you’ll find mostly bar seating and an open kitchen with friendly faces shucking up fresh oysters and serving savory potato raclette, charcuterie boards, and mouth-watering firecracker shrimp.
DAY 2
9:00 a.m. | Ease into the Day with Local Flavor
Start your morning slow and satisfying at Vermont Artisan Coffee & Tea in the red barn right off Route 100, one of Vermont’s federally designated scenic byways. This modern café is the perfect place to wake up with a handcrafted latte, hot tea, or cold brew while planning your next stops.
10:00 a.m. – Late Morning | A Stroll Through Local Shops
After breakfast, enjoy a leisurely morning browsing Waterbury’s local gems:
Danforth Pewter – Handcrafted pewter gifts and keepsakes with timeless charm.
Lake Champlain Chocolates – Artisanal and indulgent treats, made right here in Vermont.
Vermont Flannel Company – Ultra-soft flannel clothing and cozy gear, perfect for a chilly Vermont evening.
Smugglers’ Notch Distillery & Tasting Room – Sample small-batch spirits and maybe take home a bottle of maple bourbon or vodka.
Green Mountain Dry Goods – Featuring Vermont souvenirs, from home goods and clothing to, of course, delicious maple treats.
12:30 p.m. | Lunch at Cold Hollow Cider Mill
Now that you’ve worked up an appetite, head to the Café & Tasting Room at Cold Hollow for a lunch that’s as comforting as it is classic. Grab a hearty, handmade sandwich (the turkey apple cheddar is a local favorite), enjoy a cold glass of hard cider, and don’t forget the sweet finish: a cider donut or the iconic Dreamee—a cider donut filled with vanilla ice cream.
Now that you’re recharged, it’s time to hit the road, or the trail, for more Green Mountain magic.

2:00 p.m. | Choose Your Adventure: Outdoor Fun, Your Way
After lunch, it’s time to enjoy Waterbury’s outdoor playgrounds. Whether you’re looking for laid-back fun or a trail ride, you’ve got many great options. Here are two suggestions:
Option 1: Play like a local, and hit the Frisbee Golf Course
Head to the Center Chains Disc Golf Course at Hope Davey Park for a relaxed and playful afternoon. This 18-hole course provides a family-friendly atmosphere with open fields, picnic areas, and a nearby playground. You can bring your discs or rent them at Waterbury Sports.
Option 2: Mountain Biking at Perry Hill
Are you ready for more adventure? Visit Perry Hill, one of Vermont’s top mountain biking networks. The climb is no joke, but the views and flowing descents are worth every pedal stroke. Not quite ready for the climb? Head to the Pump Track at the base—fun for kids and adults alike. If you didn’t bring bikes, no problem; rentals are available from Waterbury Sports or Bicycle Express, both located in town.
4:30 p.m. | Check In and Refresh
After an active afternoon, it’s time to relax and freshen up before dinner. Two additional lodging options await:
Option 1: The Grunberg Haus Inn & Cabins
Are you looking for an eclectic getaway? The Grunberg Haus, located just outside of town, offers rooms and cozy cabins decorated with eclectic charm — think walls lined with skateboards, snowboards, and vintage art, plus a vinyl record collection any music lover would admire. It’s a peaceful, personality-packed retreat perfect for couples or anyone craving character and quiet.
Option 2: Best Western Plus Waterbury-Stowe
If you’re traveling with family or the dog or prefer classic comfort, the Best Western offers a more traditional stay with spacious rooms, an indoor pool, easy access to downtown, and pet friendly rooms. Children will enjoy the pool, while parents will value the hotel’s convenient location.

6:30 p.m. | Dinner
After a full day of exploring, it’s time to unwind with a dinner that’s as memorable as the rest of your day. Fortunately, you’re surrounded by some of Vermont’s most acclaimed dining experiences, each offering locally sourced, seasonal menus in stunning settings:
Option 1: GALLUS HANDCRAFTED PASTA
Tucked into Waterbury’s old Grist Mill right on the bank of a rushing river, Gallus Handcrafted Pasta offers exactly what’s in the name – handmade pasta, including gluten-free options, served alongside local ingredients, cocktails, and approachable wines, some with Green Mountain terroir. Reservations are recommended but the restaurant holds some seats aside for walk-ins.
Option 2: Hen of the Wood
A beloved staple in Vermont’s culinary scene, Hen of the Wood delivers bold and creative dishes. Located right downtown, Waterbury’s ambience is warm and spacious, with modern lighting overlooking Main Street. Offering tables, a bar, and seating overlooking an open grill, it’s the perfect place to end your day. If there’s a wait, ask if you can grab a drink downstairs—it’s part of the experience. Ideal for foodies and those who enjoy a livelier, communal vibe. Reservations recommended.
DAY 3
9:00 a.m. | Morning Rituals and Mountain Vibes
Start your final day in Waterbury with a visit to Black Cap Coffee & Bakery, a welcoming café located in the functioning Waterbury-Stowe Amtrak train station. Pair your morning drink with a freshly baked scone, a hearty breakfast sandwich, or one of their house-made pastries.
10:00 a.m. | Village Wandering and Local Treasures
After breakfast, spend your morning exploring Waterbury Village, where you’ll discover a mix of locally owned shops, galleries, and hidden gems tucked into historic and beautiful storefronts.
Start your stroll on Stowe Street, where you can admire local art at Phoenix Gallery & Music Hall and Axel’s Gallery & Frame Shop. Both showcase the community’s creative spirit. Pop into Jeremy Ayers Pottery for a peek at the local artists’ handmade and functional pieces.
Then, dive into a little retail therapy. Whether you’re shopping for gifts, souvenirs, or just something that sparks joy, there’s plenty to explore:
Yarn – cozy, colorful selections for crafters
Waterbury Sports – outdoor gear and local trail advice
Autumn Records – a music lover’s paradise
Sunflower Boutique – stylish finds and accessories
Bridgeside Books – an indie bookstore with titles for every reader
Stowe Street Emporium – a delightful mix of eclectic gifts and decor
Cask & Cork – craft beer lovers, rejoice
BHAV Spa Gift Shop – wellness-inspired gifts and local treats
Take your time and let curiosity lead the way; shopping in Vermont’s historic downtowns feels more like a treasure hunt than errands.

Afternoon into Evening | A Flavor-Filled Brewery and Restaurant Crawl
After a morning of exploring the village and supporting local shops, it’s time to treat your taste buds to one of Waterbury’s greatest claims to fame: its thriving food and beverage scene.
Start your afternoon with a walking brewery tour; Waterbury is home to some of the best craft beer in Vermont, and everything is conveniently close by:
Freak Folk Bier – a creative, small-batch brewery with beautifully balanced pours
Big Tree Hill Beer Co. at the Reservoir – local beers with a humble and down-to-earth vibe
The Tropic Brewing – new to the scene, tropical-inspired flavors, and a laid-back atmosphere
Prohibition Pig Brewery – the building “out back” behind the restaurant pouring ales, lagers, and lighter beers, and featuring a dog-friendly patio
Not into beer? No problem. The Wine Vault at the Cask & Cork offers carefully selected wines and often hosts free Friday tastings, making it the perfect place to sip something new.
Ready for dinner? Waterbury’s restaurant game is strong. Try a “choose-your-own-crawl” style evening by sampling a few local spots:
Prohibition Pig Restaurant – a must-visit for BBQ lovers and beer enthusiasts alike.
Blackback Pub – known for its rotating and extensive tap list, globally inspired menu, and neighborhood feel.
You can revisit favorites from earlier in the day or explore new places you didn’t get to. Whether you’re sharing plates, tasting flights, or just soaking in the ambiance, this is the perfect way to wind down your Waterbury adventure, full of flavor, local spirit, and memories.
The Final Stop | A Stay at the Old Stagecoach Inn
On the final night, rest your head at the Old Stagecoach Inn. Located right in the heart of the village, this charming historic bed & breakfast offers cozy rooms, warm hospitality, and a true sense of place. Whether you’re relaxing in the parlor with a good book, enjoying a homemade breakfast, or sipping a cocktail in their onsite pub, it’s a memorable way to wrap up your Green Mountain getaway.
