Stately, Distinctive and Memorable
A HISTORIC DOWNTOWN
With its stately brick and stone buildings along the gently sloping town green and cascading falls of the Otter Creek, Middlebury is a compelling destination for culture, shopping, recreation and overnight stays.
The locally-owned Vermont Bookstore, featuring great reads and a fine selection of jazz and classical recordings, is just one of downtown’s delightful shops. Nearby are clothing, sporting goods, and unusual houseware stores. Across the river there are a number of restaurant to choose from, and local manufacturers creating pewter, artisan beer, wooden toys and other products.
Middlebury’s distinctive cultural attractions include the Vermont Folklife Center, Henry Sheldon Museum of Vermont History, the UVM Morgan Horse Farm, and Middlebury College Museum of Art. The Middlebury College Mahaney Center for the Arts offers a full schedule of dance performances, stage productions, and concerts during the academic year, while Town Hall Theater hosts theater productions, performances and art exhibits throughout the year. Notable also is the late August staging of the annual Middlebury New Filmmakers Festival, which showcases the work of first and second time filmmakers from around the world.
For outdoor enthusiasts there’s hiking, biking, golf, kayaking, fly fishing, bird watching, alpine and cross-country skiing. The Middlebury College Bowl and several nearby Nordic and snowshoe centers offer great winter fun. The Trail Around Middlebury is accessible for gentle hikes right from downtown, while the Green Mountain National Forest offers more challenging terrain and access to Vermont's Long Trail. The area is also known for excellent bicycling in the rolling farmlands and foothills of the Green Mountains.
