Lively Year Round
A HISTORIC DOWNTOWN
From historic roots in education and journalism provided by early East Poultney residents Horace Greeley and George Jones, Poultney offers ample opportunity for writers, environmentalists and outdoor enthusiasts.
Natural features that set Poultney apart include the Poultney River, winding its way through town with several phenomenal swimming holes, and Lake St. Catherine, with a State Park, beach, and many open-water opportunities. The D&H Multi-Use Recreation Trail passes through the center Poultney’s Downtown, where wide sidewalks guide visitors down historic Main Street to shops, diners, and seasonal events.
Visitors can thumb through antique and rare books at Hermit Hill Book Store, or pick up the perfect present at The Original Vermont Store. Household needs come with a smile at Williams’ True Value Hardware, and flowers, chocolates and more are available in other downtown shops. Home-style diners and delis serve great food and Tap’s Tavern’s “Bluegrass Tuesdays” and other nightly musical events provide entertainment.
