Historic Downtowns
Bustling shops and scenic beauty welcome visitors to Vermont’s downtowns. In Newport, look for a slice of lake life close to the Canadian border. Vermont’s capital, Montpelier, is the only one in the U.S. without a Starbucks or McDonald’s restaurant; there, enjoy the welcoming vibe of local small businesses. Manchester is a bedrock of Vermont culture and history and Burlington, Vermont’s biggest city, is home to the No. 1 public square in the U.S.
Vermont’s Northern Regions
Northern Vermont is geographically diverse, containing both the state’s biggest city, Burlington, and its most remote region, the Northeast Kingdom. Indulge in the spirit of lakeside relaxation in the Champlain Islands, cycle across Lake Champlain on the Colchester causeway, and take in the fjord-like beauty of Lake Willoughby, Vermont’s deepest lake, in Westmore. Throughout the region, local dining, scenic views, and outdoor recreation set the scene.
Signature Events
Vermont’s signature events are an annual tradition. Celebrate everything from agriculture at a garlic festival to the written word in Brattleboro and the LGBTQ+ community at a dedicated ski weekend in Stowe. In late summer and early fall, harvest festivals and county fairs offer fun for the whole family, including fair food and livestock exhibits. Live music echoes through downtowns and gets toes tapping at events throughout the year.
